Creating something meaningful from nothing is a challenge every entrepreneur faces, but for Darlene Parks, founder of LeneNicole Candle Co., it was a journey fueled by passion, purpose, and a desire to uplift the spirit. Born out of her kitchen with no capital but an unstoppable vision, LeneNicole Candle Co. has blossomed into a high-quality, Black woman-owned business that resonates with authenticity, emotion, and connection. Located just minutes from Washington D.C., this brand isn’t just about luxurious scents; it’s about crafting a personal experience, one candle at a time, that reflects how we feel, nurture self-care, and foster comfort in our homes.

What was the inspiration behind your brand?
The inspiration behind LeneNicole Candle Co. stems from a deep passion for creativity, self-expression, and the transformative power of scent. Founded in a kitchen with no capital, the journey began as a testament to resilience and a desire to create something meaningful. LeneNicole was built to evoke emotions, celebrate life’s moments, and bring comfort and joy to homes. It’s inspired by the belief that candles are more than just products — they are vessels for memories, self-care, and connection. Every detail, from the fragrance blends to the storytelling behind each candle, reflects a commitment to quality, authenticity, and a genuine love for the craft.
Do you believe in work- life balance? If so, how do you maintain it?
Maintaining work-life balance as a mom, wife, and entrepreneur requires intentional planning, clear boundaries, and self-care. It starts with setting designated work hours and sticking to them, allowing time to fully transition into family life without distractions. Delegating tasks and asking for help — whether from your spouse, extended family, or hired support — ensures that the weight of responsibilities is shared. Prioritizing quality time, such as family dinners or weekend activities, fosters connection and helps maintain focus on what matters most. Involving your family in your business journey, like seeking their feedback or having them attend events, creates a sense of inclusion and understanding. Equally important is carving out moments for yourself, whether through a quiet morning routine, a solo outing, or simply enjoying the comfort of a candle-lit space to recharge. Planning and communication are key; using shared calendars or regular check-ins keeps everyone aligned. Above all, embracing flexibility and giving yourself grace on imperfect days ensures that balance is achieved over time, not in isolated moments.
What’s your best piece of advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?
My best piece of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is to start where you are with what you have and trust the process. Success doesn’t come from waiting for the perfect moment or having all the resources upfront — it comes from taking that first step and being willing to learn along the way. Understand that challenges and setbacks are part of the journey, but they’re also opportunities for growth and resilience. Stay focused on your “why,” the deeper reason behind your business, because that will keep you motivated when things get tough. Build a strong foundation by staying true to your values, delivering quality, and connecting authentically with your audience. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help, seek mentorship, or pivot when necessary. Every step forward, no matter how small, is progress toward your vision.

Who is your business role model? Why?
My business role model is someone who embodies resilience, creativity, and the ability to turn passion into a thriving brand. Whether it’s a figure like Oprah Winfrey, who built an empire from humble beginnings, or a trailblazer in the female led business world like Teri Johnson (owner of Harlem Candle Co), I admire individuals who have overcome challenges and stayed authentic to their purpose. My role model is someone who prioritizes quality, connects deeply with their audience, and uses their platform to uplift others. Their journey reminds me that success isn’t linear — it’s about perseverance, adaptability, and maintaining integrity. I’m inspired by their ability to balance growth with staying true to their roots, which is a principle I strive to uphold with LeneNicole Candle Co
What would attract listeners to your personal story?
My personal story attracts listeners because it’s a powerful testament to resilience, creativity, and purpose. Starting LeneNicole Candle Co. in my kitchen with no capital is inspiring in itself, but the heart of your story lies in how I turned challenges into opportunities. Listeners would connect with me authenticity, especially as a mom, wife, and entrepreneur juggling multiple roles while staying true to my vision. My journey from humble beginnings to crafting candles for celebrities, growing year after year, and giving back to my community shows a relatable yet aspirational path. I believe people love stories that remind them of the power of determination, and my ability to create something meaningful from scratch, all while balancing life, is incredibly motivational.
What is your proudest business accomplishment?
One of my proudest moments as the founder of LeneNicole Candle Co. was securing an A-list celebrity as a wholesale client. It was a surreal experience that validated years of hard work, creativity, and commitment to excellence. Knowing that someone of such influence and high standards chose my candles was not only humbling but also a testament to the quality and uniqueness of my brand. It reminded me that no dream is too big and that authenticity and persistence can open incredible doors. That moment wasn’t just about the celebrity name — it was about what it symbolized: recognition for my craft and the realization that my small business, which started in my kitchen, could compete on a world-class level. It continues to inspire me to push boundaries and create products worthy of any spotlight.
